Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973)

Bruce Lee was probably the most influential martial artist of the 20th century. He was born in America, but raised in Hong Kong.  He rose to fame as a martial arts actor and created an upsurge of interest in the Chinese martial arts, and martial arts in general. His physical presence on film was astounding and left a lasting impression in the minds of millions of people worldwide. The Chinese martial arts were virtually unknown in the west before Bruce Lee introduced them in the mass media.

ImageIn 1965 Bruce Lee founded the martial art Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist). He called it a “style of no style”, because it was based on the simple philosophy of using only what works, discarding that which doesn’t, and adding to it one’s own creativity.

Bruce Lee took “that which works” from a great variety of martial arts. In his youth he studied Wu style Tai Chi with his father but his main teacher in Hong Kong was Yip Man who taught him Wing Chun Gung Fu. In America Bruce Lee diversified his martial interests, studying western boxing, fencing and wrestling, Hapkido  and Kali Escrima among others. He was very scientific in his training and was constantly experimenting with new ways of improving strength, conditioning and skill.

His skills, abilities and philosophies were revolutionary. The saddest thing about his untimely and mysterious death was that we will never know just what he could have become, and what levels he would have reached.

“I am not a master. I am a student-master, meaning that I have the knowledge of a master and the expertise of a master, but I’m still learning. So I am a student-master. I don’t believe in the word ‘master’. I consider the master as such when they close the casket.”                                                                                                                                                                                    - RIP Master Lee
